Mike Reilly: What Happens After the Finish Line?
For more than three decades, Mike Reilly stood at some of the most emotional finish lines in endurance sports, welcoming athletes home with four words that became synonymous with IRONMAN: “You are an IRONMAN.” But what happens after the finish line? In this episode, Jill sits down with the legendary Voice of IRONMAN to talk about the lessons Mike learned from a lifetime spent watching people chase extraordinarily difficult things—and the ideas behind his new book, Finding Your Finish Line. Mike shares what it was like to walk away from announcing after 33 years, why our “why” changes throughout life, and why reaching the goal we thought would make us happy sometimes doesn’t. They explore identity, purpose, fear, complacency, family, coaching, human connection, and Mike’s belief that while we can't control everything that happens to us, we can control what we do next. And, of course, there are finish-line stories: the greatest call Mike ever made, the first athlete he ever welcomed across an IRONMAN finish line, an unexpected four-legged finisher at IRONMAN Arizona, and a few lessons learned from hundreds of thousands of athletes. This conversation is about much more than triathlon. It's about finding the courage to step onto the next start line—even when you aren't completely sure where it will lead.
For 33 years, Mike Reilly was one of the most recognizable voices in endurance sports.
As the legendary Voice of IRONMAN, Mike witnessed thousands upon thousands of moments when months—or years—of work came down to a single finish line.
Now he's asking a different question:
What comes next?
Jill sits down with Mike for a wide-ranging conversation about endurance sports, life, purpose, coaching, family, and the lessons behind his new book, Finding Your Finish Line.
They talk about why a finish line isn't necessarily the destination we imagine it to be, and why accomplishing something enormous doesn't automatically bring happiness or answer the question of what comes next.
Mike also opens up about his own transition away from IRONMAN announcing. After decades of travel and weekends away from his family, leaving the microphone gave him something he hadn't had in years: time. But it also meant stepping away from a community that had become his second family.
In this episode:
- How a kid from Toledo ended up becoming the Voice of IRONMAN
- Why the finish line can actually be the beginning
- The greatest IRONMAN finish-line call Mike ever made
- What Mike missed most after stepping away from announcing
- Why our “why” changes throughout our lives
- Staying present instead of living in the past or future
- The relationship between endurance sports and healthy aging
- What Mike believes separates great coaches from everyone else
- Why the best coaches are often the best listeners
- Mike's picks for underrated IRONMAN courses
- The first athlete Mike ever called across an IRONMAN finish line
- The unforgettable dog who ran through the IRONMAN Arizona finish chute
- Why technology and AI can't replace human connection
- The “arrival fallacy” and why achieving the big goal doesn't automatically make us happy
- Knowing when it's time to find your next finish line
- Why Mike says, “You are the cause of your own experience”
- Finding start lines that scare you
- Why nobody can ultimately motivate you better than you
Mike's message is simple but powerful: we don't control everything that happens around us. We do control how we respond, where we go next, and whether we're willing to take that first step.
